This past week I received an unexpected gift: A massive forest fire close to my home here in Colorado. How could this be a gift you may wonder? I was wondering the same thing when on Sunday night on my way home late at night I had to get permission (from a policeman who was blocking the main road that runs near my neighborhood) to come home.

Homes less than a mile from where I live had been evacuated Sunday afternoon and the fire was spreading at one mile per hour. The fire started on Saturday morning and grew to 10,000 acres in one day. Sunday it was 20,000 acres. I thought I knew what was happening and didn’t think I was in any potential danger. I was wrong.

It’s Wednesday as I’m writing you – the fire is approaching 50,000 acres. It’s no longer headed towards me. I’m not in harm’s way. But so many others still are. One woman has lost her life in the fire (there may be others), and countless others have been displaced through evacuations and loss of their home to the fire. It has been a devastating experience for those directly impacted by the fire.

I understand that on the global scale, this disaster ranks towards the bottom of recent happenings, be they natural disasters, war, famine, etc.. It’s been natural for me to feel concern for those who are suffering.

It’s quite different to have a personal and admittedly minor taste of natural disaster. This is the gift I’ve received this past week. As small as the experience was, I was disoriented. I could feel my soul wanting to pull out of my body when on Monday morning I took some basic things when I left to spend time with my daughters over lunch and wondered if I would be able to return. I’ve never had that experience before – though I’ve worked with many people around the world who have been through much worse. The gift has been the perspective from this experience.

This got me thinking about other unexpected gifts in my life.

Perhaps the most profound has been the discovery and unfolding of my spiritual gifts over the last five years. This morning I worked with one of my weekly clients – a messenger doing profound work in the world. She began to transcend some boundaries that have been in place since she was born during our session. I got to witness that first hand. I get to do that for a living. WOW!!!

All because of an unexpected gift.
