God’s Blue Ocean Strategy (for you)

In 2005 when I was working as a mortgage lender, a book came out that made all the rounds in the business development and coaching groups I belonged to at the time. It was called Blue Ocean Strategy (W. Chan Kim & Renee Mauborgne – Harvard Business School Press). It was about doing business in an uncontested (versus commoditized) marketplace—a blue ocean.

This book had a profound impact on me, and though I had worked hard to differentiate myself in the financial services world, it wasn’t until I started exploring God’s unique expression through me that I began to have a first-hand experience of what the authors were exploring.

Last week I was talking with a good friend (who is still in financial services) about what he’s doing to differentiate his business in the marketplace, and I said: “God’s expression through you is your blue ocean strategy.” I meant his presence—entirely a function of the embodied Divine within—is the thing that makes him unique. Not the stuff he sells, or even the approach he takes to financial planning and helping individuals and couples meet their financial goals. He immediately understood and started to relax. Nothing more to do. Just to be who he really is.

This is always true. Yet as spiritual messengers, how many times have we pursued a way to share the too-weird-for-words ways that God expresses through us, by acquiring certifications in modalities or coaching strategies in an attempt to become more acceptable and accessible to the clients we hope to serve? The same dynamic unfolds when we hire marketing experts to craft the message or image and communicate our unique selling proposition or differentiate us in whatever marketplace we happen to be doing business. By seeking to be acceptable and accessible, or to project our uniqueness and differentiate, we unintentionally accomplish the opposite and migrate from the blue ocean God has queued up for us into a highly commoditized and competitive red ocean.

I remember some years ago I was on the phone with a spiritual messenger in New Mexico. I had just been in Santa Fe giving a talk, and this person was lamenting the challenges of competing for business with the many other people who shared the same certification in a modality that was supposed to differentiate their spiritual offering.

The other theme this past week has been one that is so simple and obvious, it frequently slips from my conscious awareness: God is in everyone and everything. Said another way: either God is everywhere, or God is nowhere.

One of the favorite games of my separate self is to wonder what I need to (or can, should, or must) do to make some part of my life better (more complete or capable of expressing divine wholeness, etc.).

In separation (thinking God is only in some places—and its corollary that there are some places where God is not) the answer to this question is without end. In wholeness (God is everywhere), the answer is: Nothing!

I’d like to explore these themes with you, along with whatever else might be top of mind for you right now, later today (Wednesday, June 24, 2020) during our virtual community circle meditation, transmission, and Q&A on YouTube starting at 5p Eastern (US).

That’s it for this week … From My Heart.

Always in God’s Love and Presence,

Ken
